Federal Financial Aid

According to the Higher Education Act of 1965 students can use government-issued financial aid for study abroad if they are enrolled in programs that their home university approves. Financial aid can be used to offset costs associated with studying abroad including:

  • program tuition and fees
  • travel and transportation
  • living costs
  • health insurance
  • passport and visa fees

Eligibility

In order to use federal financial aid for a study abroad program, we recommend that you first speak with your Financial Aid Office and Study Abroad Office to determine if they will allow you to use your financial aid for our programs. They should be able to guide you through the process of transferring your financial aid. If your university is unwilling to assist you with federal financial aid, please contact the Education Abroad Network for assistance.

Types of Aid

  • Stafford Loans - These loans are issued either directly from the government or a private lender, that are offered to students at a low interest rate. Payment is deferred until after the student has left university. Loan fees also apply.
  • Parent Plus Loans - These are loans provided to parents for the educational expenses of a dependent child. Repayment begins 60 days after loan money is issued.
  • Perkins Loans - Perkins Loans are similar to Stafford Loans, but they have a longer grace period and do not accrue loan fees. Loan amounts are limited to a maximum of $4000.
  • PELL Grants - This financial award is issued by the government and does not have to be repaid. Only undergraduate students are eligible for PELL Grants. The maximum award is approximately $4300.

Private Financial Aid

Not all universities will allow students to use their financial aid for study abroad programs administered by a program provider such as the Education Abroad Network. To meet the financial need of these students, there are organizations that specialize in private student loans.
