Sports Medicine / Physical Therapy Intern

Location: Australian Rules, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer and Field Hockey clubs throughout Australia including Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, The Gold Coast, Adelaide and various regional locations.
Status: This is a 32+ hour per week commitment including weekend and evening work as required.

This is a hand-on internship with sporting teams incorporating class room training and additional site visits to venues and training facilities. The sports involved are some of the most physically and mentally challenging combing speed, strength, endurance, coordination, flexibility and the ability to sustain significant contact. The medical and training staffs  face daunting challenges in assisting the players maintain overall heath in what is considered a long season, in particular where weather conditions can have a significant impact on the players and the way the game is played.

Key Focus

Working with team medical staff including doctors, physical therapist, trainers and chiropractors the Interns will have exposure to areas related to;

  • Roles & Responsibilities of the Level 1 (AUS) Sports Trainer
  • Structure & Function of the Musculo Skeletal System (Anatomy)
  • Warm-Up/Stretching/Cool-down
  • Immediate Assessment, Management & Referral of Sports Injuries (STOP, TOTAPS, RICER regime)
  • Management of Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Ankle, Thumb & Finger Taping
  • Advanced Taping
  • Medical Conditions
  • Nutrition
  • Crisis Management (C.P.R)
  • Fracture Management
  • Transport of the Injured Athlete
  • Control of External Bleeding

Job / Task Profile:

The responsibilities involved in these Internships cover a variety of areas including;

  • providing support to medical and training staff (including doctors, physiotherapist, trainers and chiropractors) in restoring motor skills, balance, coordination, overall endurance and physical fitness of athletes who have suffered injuries;
  • assisting in the maintenance and organization of the training and medical facilities at team’s home facilities as well as mobile facilities;
  • assist, as required, the medical and training staff in their respective private practices ( mostly involving sports medicine); and other related tasks as required.

Competencies and Experience

Interns musts have the ability to;

  • Coordinate and Manage ongoing tasks;
  • Strong Planning, Organizational and Communicative (written and verbal) skills;
  • Educational background and experience related to sports medicine, physical therapy, exercise physiology, kinesiology or related fields.
  • Interns will be in the later stages of completing their degree or recent graduates.
