Myanmar Earthquake

24 March 2011

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck along the Myanmar border approximately 100 kilometers north of Chiang Rai in Thailand's northernmost province. In Chiang Mai, there was no immediate damage reported, but the earthquake was felt strongly. All TEAN participants in Thailand are accounted for and were with TEAN's Resident Director and Payap Unviersity's Study Abroad Director at the time of the quake.

Japan Earthquake-related Tsunami

11 March 2011

The Education Abroad Network is currently monitoring the tsunami-warnings that are a direct result of a massive earthquake in Japan.

  • The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is reporting that there is "no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories."

  • New Zealand is currently reporting a "Marine Threat" but this has been issued for the far north of the islands near the Bay of Islands. Marine threats are issued for beaches and watercraft and not for those residing on the main islands.

  • There have been no reports of warnings for Thailand and China that impact our locations in Chiang Mai, Beijing or Shanghai.

Christchurch Earthquake

28 February 2011

Our University of Canterbury program was suspended on February 27, 2011. All participants have been relocated to Wellington, New Zealand and are currently enrolled at either Massey University or Victoria University of Wellington.

26 February 2011

Our New Zealand Site Director, Lauren Gabell, is currently meeting with our University of Canterbury participants to discuss their options for the semester, which may include transferring to another one of our New Zealand locations. As more information becomes available we will update this site. The University of Canterbury has also been providing daily updates which are posted on thier home page - http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/

23 February 2011

As of 11:00 am local time on February 23rd all but one of TEAN’s University of Canterbury students were transported to O’Kains Bay – a town approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes outside of Christchurch.  The remaining University of Canterbury student will be staying on with a local family in Christchurch.  TEAN’s Lincoln University student is also going to remain on campus with other students since the earthquake did not directly affect this area. All parents were notified of these developments yesterday.

The majority of our Australia-based students participating in the New Zealand Pre-Semester Excursion are safely en route to Australia at this time.  A TEAN staff member will accompany the remaining students on a flight departing from Christchurch at 7:00 am local time, February 24th.

We await an official announcement from the University of Canterbury on when the university will be reopening.  In the meantime, we are exploring the option of moving students to another New Zealand institution.  This proactive approach will allow us to successfully integrate students into a new university in the event of an extreme delay on the reopening of the University of Canterbury. No final decisions on the University of Canterbury semester program have been made at this time.

We will continue to monitor the situation.  Additional updates will follow in the coming days as authorities and our university partners provide us with more details.

22 February 2011

On Tuesday, February 22nd between 12:00 and 1:00 pm a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the South Island of New Zealand.  The center of the earthquake was located approximately 10 kms south of the city of Christchurch.  This earthquake resulted in widespread damage in Christchurch and the surrounding areas.

All TEAN students studying on the South Island and those participating in the New Zealand South Island Pre-Semester Excursion are safe and accounted for. TEAN staff members in the Christchurch area, US, and in Australia are coordinating efforts to assist students returning to Australia and to provide support for those students based at local universities. Currently our Pre-Semester Excursion students are staying at a hotel in the town of Springfield approximately 68 kms west of Christchurch awaiting further details on flight options.  Our partners at the University of Canterbury and Lincoln University are using their campus support systems to assist our New Zealand semester students.

We will continue to work on alternate flight options for the students participating in the New Zealand Pre-Semester Excursion.  Updates will be provided for the affected students and their parents as more information becomes available.
