Program Details
Housing
Choose from two university housing options: a private, dorm-style room in a residence hall or a private bedroom in a shared flat. In the residence hall, which includes shared bathrooms, lounge spaces, and a full board meal plan for the hall’s dining room, you’ll live with primarily first-year local and other international students. The self-catered, apartment-style accommodation comes with a bathroom, kitchen, and lounge area designed for five flatmates. Your TEAN Program Manager will provide more information about your housing options once you apply for the program.
TEAN Staff
Our team works with you from start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in New Zealand, you will meet our team who will provide assistance during your time in-country. Throughout your semester you will meet with the Hamilton Resident Advisor for informal discussions and excursions. Our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

Courses
Courses (called “papers” in New Zealand) are available in the below disciplines. For detailed instructions on how to find and select courses, and a list of popular courses at the University of Waikato, see our course selection instructions. Students enroll in 3-4 papers per semester (45 and 60 Waikato points), which usually transfers as 12-16 US semester credits or 18-24 US quarter hours.

Internships
Internships
TEAN students have the opportunity to complete an internship during their semester in addition to taking 2-3 other classes. Open to all majors, internship placements are available at non-profit organizations, as well as in the corporate and government sectors, and consist of 15 internship hours across 2-3 days each week (180 hours total) that equals 15 Waikato credits, or 3-4 U.S. credits. If interested in interning, you will enroll in 2-3 other classes in addition to the internship course.
Research
Research
Students studying sciences who are in their third year or higher can take a specialized, research-focused science course: SCIEN301 for group projects or SCIEN313 for individual undergraduate research projects. There are several group projects run each semester or you can choose your own research topic (subject to approval), working with expert faculty in fields such as animal behavior, chemistry, coastal processes, earth science, ecology and biodiversity, environmental sciences, hydrology, and more.
Some projects may require specific knowledge or experience with instruments or research methods. Ask your TEAN Program Manager for more information.

- 2.5 GPA. Students with a lower GPA are encouraged to apply and may be admitted on a case-by-case basis.
- Minimum sophomore standing at a four-year institution at the time of participation.
EVENTS & EXCURSIONS
ACTIVITIES/IMMERSION
Our local staff organize various activities throughout the semester to help immerse you in the local culture. Each semester includes a minimum of three cultural activities or events, and two coffee catch-ups where you can connect with your Program Manager and other TEAN students. These are all included in your program price! If you have a specific interest or hobby, your Hamilton-based Resident Director can also point you in the right direction.
In addition to the TEAN events, our local team sends out frequent emails letting you know what is happening in Hamilton and throughout the country – ranging from community events to music festivals – so you can make the most of your time in New Zealand.

TEAN has a rolling admissions process. We recommend submitting your application anytime from June for Spring applications, and from January for Fall applications. Late applications may be considered. Contact TEAN if the application deadline has passed.

Your signed program contract and full payment for the program are due by the program deadline. Please note we do have options for using financial aid and enrolling in a payment plan if you cannot make full payment by the payment deadline.
