Semester in Fiji
Head to the South Pacific to spend a semester studying abroad on the tropical island of Fiji. From Fiji’s fascinating capital city, Suva, join a diverse, multicultural student and faculty population at the University of the South Pacific (USP). As the region’s most prestigious university, USP’s tropical campus serves as a base to further your studies, meet other international and local students through immersive activities organized by the USP Students Association, and as a jumping-off point for unique field trips and excursions. Program Details
Orientation
Get to know your new home and fellow TEAN students with an adventure-packed 3-day TEAN Orientation in tropical Pacific Harbour, about an hour’s drive from Suva on Fiji’s southern coast. Start with a welcome session and dinner at your thatched beachside accommodation to further get used to island life. Head out on a village tour to learn more about Fiji’s indigenous peoples, take a boat up the Navua River, experience a traditional Fijian meke dance and kava ceremony, glide on bamboo rafts to a hidden waterfall, spend a day snorkeling in Fiji’s clear waters and more!
On the final day, transfer back to USP and move into your university flat. The orientation is included in your program price and covers all activities and meals for a hassle-free introduction to Fiji.
University Orientation
USP’s own 4-day orientation, known as O-Week, before the semester starts includes faculty-specific orientations, a campus tour, daily entertainment, academic workshops and activities at the O-Week Village.
Housing
Stay in simple on-campus apartments designed into clusters of air-conditioned, fully-furnished units with two to four single-occupancy bedrooms, common living spaces, kitchens, and shared bathrooms with other study abroad students. Enjoy an included weekly cleaning service, linens and towels, on-site laundry facilities on-site and WiFi (though do know that the internet can be somewhat unreliable). All housing is self-catered and just a 6-minute walk to the closest grocery store plus nearby restaurants and cafes. Sula’s downtown center is three kilometers away.
TEAN Staff
Our team works with you start to finish through the study abroad process. Our programs staff will help guide you through the application process to go abroad, then upon arrival in Suva, you will be met by our on-site staff who will provide assistance throughout your time in Fiji. Through regular on-campus advising hours, informal meals held together and excursions, our staff is readily available and able to assist you with any academic, social, or cultural questions or issues that you may face during your time abroad.

- TEAN students enroll at the University of South Pacific’s (USP), Laucala campus in Suva, Fiji.
- USP serves as the primary university for the South Pacific’s 12 island nations, jointly owned by the governments of 12 member countries in the Pacific and offering three faculties: Faculty of Arts, Law & Education, Faculty of Business and Economics, and Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment.
- Befitting its tropical environment with large, open-air buildings surrounding a lush courtyard, the school draws in students from across the region making it highly multicultural.

Courses

Events & Excursions
Events & Excursions
Various events and excursions highlighting Fiji’s history, culture, cuisine and nature are organized throughout the semester and included in the program fee. Depending on the semester, these can include a Suva city tour sharing local insight, visits to local markets, the Fiji Museum or Pure Fiji factory, a natural skincare brand using local ingredients, Fijian or Indian cooking classes, exploring Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, a rainforest sanctuary and more.

Resident Director - Fiji
Born and raised in Suva, Akisi studied Tourism and Management & Public Administration at the University of the South Pacific and has been using her degree ever since by working in the tourism industry. Passionate about travel and the local environment, Akisi loves sharing her knowledge with students to help you better understand Fiji’s culture and your experiences in the island nation.
Kate studied abroad with The Education Abroad Network at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia where her passion for international education and travel was ignited. Her study abroad experience impacted her so much that upon her return stateside, she became a TEAN Student Ambassador at The University of Iowa while completing her degree in Communication Studies. After graduation, she returned to Melbourne for a year where she worked for a university on the Marketing and Student Recruitment team. Kate has since lived in New Zealand for a year, and is currently TEAN’s New Zealand and Fiji Programs Manager and team lead.

Tell us a little about what you do at TEAN?
I currently work on our New Zealand, Fiji, Japan and Southeast Asia programs. My role as team lead and Program Manager is to make sure everything on these programs is running smoothly working with our team. It includes everything from making sure students have pre-departure information on time to making sure they submit all of the items they need to study abroad (i.e. transcripts, courses, contracts, arrival details, payments, visa confirmations).
Where did you study abroad?
I studied with TEAN in Melbourne, Australia at Deakin University. It’s a more traditional campus, just outside the city but being able to live in the city and commute gave me the best of both worlds. Honestly, Melbourne has something for everyone – think sporting events, art, music, theatre, comedy, laneway cafes/restaurants/bars, shopping, the list goes on. Melbourne is consistently ranked as one of the world’s most liveable cities, so why wouldn’t you choose to study there? If you’re looking for a Melbourne equivalent in New Zealand, check out Wellington known as the coolest little capital in the world. It’s a smaller city, but that makes it an easy city to get around by foot. It’s a very accessible city for study abroad students.
What brought you back to Melbourne to live and work after graduation?
When I graduated, I knew I wanted to return to Australia. My time studying abroad had given me that exposure to living abroad and I wanted to spend more time there as a professional. For my career, It was great to gain work experience at a university abroad. I’m so glad I went down this path or I might not have ended up at TEAN today!
Packing for study abroad is always a challenge and popular topic, as a frequent flyer – what insider tips do you have for someone packing for the semester?
I’ve become pretty good at packing light over the years since there have been so many times earlier on where I’ve overpacked. I took half of my closet and never touched the majority of it. You will hear the advice – pack everything you think you’ll need then take half of it – and it’s so true. My other advice is to pack articles of clothing you can mix and match to create different outfits to help reduce items. Also try to keep the shoe situation under control, they take up a lot of room. Bring a couple pairs that are super versatile (and comfortable).
If you were going to study abroad tomorrow on a TEAN program where would you go?
I’m biased, but I would study on one of our New Zealand programs. Since working with our TEAN New Zealand students, I’ve had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand several times and have visited all program locations. I also recently lived in New Zealand for a year based out of Auckland. I love the idea of going for a semester, joining a tramping club on campus and getting out into the beauty of New Zealand in my free time!
